If you are concerned about physical damage occurring to the cart itself (i.e. theft, a collision, etc.), then yes, you do need a separate golf cart policy.  These types of policies cost approximately $100 per year with our agency.  If however, you have an older model golf cart and are only concerned with the liability involved with operating a golf cart and the potential damage it could do to others, this may already be included as a part of your homeowners insurance policy.  Please be sure to check with your current insurance agent as this varies from company to company.  Currently, Farmers Insurance offers two types of homeowners insurance policies, both of which automatically include an extension of your liability coverage to your golf cart as long as you live and operate the cart in a golf course/cart community.  Talk to your agent today to make sure you are properly protected when driving your golf cart.
